Can psychologists prescribe medication?

Psychologists in Australia do not have the authority to prescribe medication. Prescribing medication is within the scope of practice for medical doctors, including psychiatrists and general practitioners. Psychologists, on the other hand, focus on psychological assessments, psychotherapy, and counseling.

If an individual requires both psychological and pharmacological interventions, collaboration between a psychologist and a psychiatrist or general practitioner is common. The psychologist can provide psychotherapy and behavioural interventions, while the medical doctor can prescribe and monitor medication, if needed.

Evidence suggests that for many mental health conditions it is the combination of psychological and pharmaceutical intervention that is the most effective.
